French Lessons

Jeff plod­ded slowly into his math class. Hav­ing to re­turn to school was such a drag after sum­mer va­ca­tion. He didn‘t much care for the al­gebra but, as a sopho­more, he had to have two cred­its of it to gradu­ate. He found an empty seat near a win­dow; it would let him day­dream and stare out­side at the clear, bright day that was passing him by as he wasted his time in a stuffy classroom.
He slouched down and waited for the teacher to come. To kill the time, he stud­ied the other stu­dents in his class. He knew most of them, had gone to school with most of them. One or two he had known, seem­ingly, for every in­stant of his six­teen years of life. Jeff was resign­ing him­self to an­other dreary class with the same tired old faces when she walked in.
